North Channel Honeymoon sail, Day 1

7-16-2016

Waking up on day two of being husband and wife Cindy and I were excited to get started off on our Honeymoon. Cindy had made the suggestion that we sail the north channel of lake Huron early on and it sounded like a very adventurous way for us to celebrate our wedding so I was all in. So over the past year I have been researching, planning, and outfitting our boat to meet the challenge.
Originally I had hoped to roll out about 6 am and head north to Sault St Marie to cross in to Canada but that did not pan out so it was a little after 8 am that Jerry was taking this pic of us before we headed north.

Finally, we were pulling out of the Cottonwood Inn in Empire MI and heading north to set sail! The drive up was very relaxed and the weather was near perfect. As we passed through Charlevoix MI where we would be sailing in a week, there was a car show going on as we passed through the downtown area. We saw lots of cool cars but this van? really caught my eye.

We had no clue what it was but if one of our readers does please let us know as we are still curious. We had a ways to go before we reached the Mackinac bridge so my bride decided to catch up on the sleep she lost the night before since we stayed on the beach till midnight.

Soon we were pulling onto I 75 just south of the bridge and as I merged onto the interstate the bridge came into view in the distance

About now is when people started passing us blowing their horns and giving us thumbs up. They must had read the sign on the back of the boat. Before long we were crossing eh 7 mile long Mackinac bridge to the UP of MI.

It was a gorgeous day and we could see for miles and miles from the bridge. Quick stop at the toll booth and we were in the UP! Next stop was the border!
One of the things I had read was how to prepare for the border crossing with the boat. I read enough horror stories of boat searches that I erred on the side of caution and made sure I had all our paperwork straight and went so far as to get a file folder and even drew a diagram of the boat in AutoCAD labeling all the storage area with what they held in case they wanted to see what all we were carrying. AS we crossed the international bridge I grabbed my folder as Cindy looked out on the shoals that separate lake Superior from lake Huron.

The shoals are the whole reason for the Sault St Marie locks and dams. Our phones welcomed us to Canada as we crossed the boarder and we pulled up to the customs booth. The lady working the booth took our passports and drivers license and asked us four simple questions. Where are we going? Spanish Ontario. How long will be staying? One week. Do we have any firearms? No. Do we have any alcohol? 4 bottle of wine. Have a great trip and enjoy your time in Canada. Well that was easy. But I had somewhat expected that as almost everyone who has trailered to the North Channel has said it is far easier to get into Canada than back into the states.
We worked our way through the streets of Canadian Sault St Marie and finally found a grocery store to get our fresh food for the boat at. We brought all of our dry and canned goods so all we needed was the perishable items we wanted, and more alcohol! We found pretty much everything we wanted minus a few small items but all was good and we were headed east to Spanish in no time. About now is when our phones informed us that we were now international travelers and we need some sort of international calling plan. Guess I never really thought of crossing into Canada as international travel. We would have to deal with that when got a signal as we lost it shortly after leaving the east side of Sault St Marie.
It was very pretty as we traveled east towards Blind River. We were keeping our eyes out for a liquor store and finally found a beer store. Hard to miss as it said BEER STORE in big letters. This was one of the first big differences we noticed between life in the states, other than the 90 kmh speed limit. Turns our in Ontario, the beer and liquor stores had to be separate stores unless they were so far from another town that had them then they could combine both into one store. We walked in and the first thing we noticed was there was no beer anywhere. We watched the guys in front of us go up to flat screen and start punching around on it so we went to the other one and learned that you found what you wanted on there and then placed your order. The workers in the back would then place your items on a conveyor and send them up to the cashier. A bit strange but when in Canada do as the Canadians do. So we picked out what we wanted, they have Bud light lime in cans north of the boarder! They sent our items up and then we were informed that 2 twelve packs of Bud Light Lime, a 12 pack of Strawberry Ritas, and 12 pack of Lime A Ritas, were almost 85 bucks!!!!  Holy Smoke!!! I handed her an American hundred dollar bill to which she did do the currency conversion for and gave us back around 50 in Canadian bills and coins. For some reason I felt violated as we walked out. Back on the road east and glad we did not live here full time, we continued our journey to Spanish.
We pulled into Spanish about 4 and the first thing we notices was how impoverished the area looked. It had defiantly seen better days. Once the mines closed down the town really went into decline. I am not sure Cindy was thinking the same thing I was but I was sure hoping the marina was nicer than the town. Luckily it was! The Marina was probably the nicest building in town, minus the Liquor store that was right on the corner where we turned off the highway to go to the marina. After checking in with the marina workers and paying for our slip for the week we pulled up next to a MacGregor 26S named Deja Vu and started getting the Memory Maker ready to launch.
We had not been working on the boat for five minutes when I ran my forehead into the grill mount on the rear pulpit and took a chunk out of my forehead. I turn the mount down so it does not stick out when we trailer down the road. I had yet to turn it back up and it caught me. First drops of blood shed on the honeymoon and we had not even got to the hard part yet. Bad sign...
We made quick work of stepping the mast and within the hour we had her ready to launch. Cindy and I made use of the nice restrooms one last time before we launched and then backed her down into the water. One nice thing about the marina was the workers would help you launch. Their boat ramp was very nice and you just had to back down beside the dock and let your boat float off the trailer then tie her off to the dock. It was so much nicer than what we have to deal with back at our home lake where Cindy backs me down in the boat till I can float away then I have to come back and get her at the side docks. We were spoiled.
With the truck parked we were ready to head off on our grand adventure of the North Channel. With Cindy at the helm we made our way out of the marina and into the marked channel that lead our into the lake. The Spanish river dumped all of it's sediment at the confluence where it meets the lake and it had gotten very shallow. So they had dredged a channel 9 or so feet deep. Get out of the channel and it very quickly drops to 2 or 3 feet. We need at least 5 feet with keel down so we stayed in the channel. Soon we were clear of the last marker and up the mainsail went. We were sailing on the North Channel!

Our spirits were high as we felt like we had done it! A year in the making and all the work and we were finally on the North Channel and it was beautiful. It took us a few minutes to figure out the charts and where we were at in relation to the rocks and islands but soon we had our bearings and we set course for Shanly Island to spend the night on a secluded little beach.
Turns out the winds in this part of the channel were much like they were at home. Indecisive would be a good way to describe them. So we had to tack back and forth a bit but we were getting there and should get to our destination well before dark. As we worked our way south we took in all the sights of the granite islands.

Picture just don't do them justice. It was very pretty. Sadly, someone beat us to our desired location so we planned on going around the south side of Shanly and anchoring on the southwest corner of Green Island. It was about now I went below to check on things. I opened up the keel locker and peeked in to find about an inch of standing water!!!!! TURN AROUND!!!!! WERE TAKIGN ON WATER!!!!!
Talk about letting the air out of your sails in a hurry! I soaked up the water with the chamois I keep aboard and then removed the port side cover plate for the keel bolts. More water there. As Cindy motored us back to Spanish on the path we just came on it was hard for me to fight back the tears. This was a serious issue and I knew it. Water was coming in around the keel bolts and the only way to fix it required the boat to be in the air. That would take me 20 mins at home but I cant do that in the marina parking lot. We were screwed. I felt so awful as I know one of the big reasons Cindy suggested we do this was because she thought it was something I would enjoy. I knew it was not her first choice so I did everything I could do to make the boat as comfortable for her as possible to maximize her enjoyment. Right now it was looking like that was all for nothing. I felt totally defeated. Here is how far we made it on try number one.

The blue line is the path we sailed and then the way we motored back to Spanish. At least we got to see Little Detroit. Not looking like we will get to go through it though...
The best I could do was hang my head on the way back to Spanish. I felt like I had already let my new bride down. Cindy was awesome in spite of the set back. She kept saying it will be fine. Oh, how little did she know...
We made it back to the channel and back to the boat ramp right before dark. Sadly I walked back to the parking lot to get the truck and trailer then we recovered our boat and headed to the parking lot where we would be spending the night in the boat. We arrived at our new "campsite" at the same time as every last mosquito in Ontario!!!! I can't begin to describe how many there were as I don't think there has ever been a number that counted that high!!! I knew were in trouble now as in order for us to be able to sleep in the boat we had to get the pop top up and the tent top I made for it on as that is was sealed the boat up. Between swatting mosquitos we climbed up the boat like squirrels being chased up a tree by our boys back home! We threw the top up and tried as fast as we could to get the tent top on. Normally it takes 5 to 7 minutes to install it. We did it in 2 but that might as well be two years instead of minutes. My white legs were black, and I mean black they had so many mosquitos on the. I would run my hands down my legs and sling them off but there were a million more ready to replace them. I had never seen anything like this even in the movies!
Finally we had the top on and we dove into the safe refugee of the boat, only to discover we had trapped at least a 1000 mosquitos in the boat with us!!!!! The next two hours were spent engaged in close quarters combat as I tried to kill all those blood sucking dirty bastards that invaded our love nest!!!
I guess I should say at this point I am having a complete and utter come apart!!! I wanted to burn the boat or at least shoot it full of holes. Oh, that is right, you can't carry in Canada. Good thing as there would be a lot of boats riddled with bullet holes! At one point my new wife of 48 hours had the audacity to tell me it wasn't that bad. My response? "Not that bad???? Look around you Cindy!!! Were on the threshold of HELL!!!!!" As I continue to swing the fly swatter. Remember the Deja Vu? Well they were parked about 10 feet from where we parked and they were already shut up in there boat. Basically boats are like tents and I am sure they heard every part of my melt down. Cindy told me at one point, "Sam, the neighbors." It was her attempt to get me calm down a bit. Sadly it did not work. My response to her is something I can't write in this blog, but Deja Vu, if you read this. I just want to apologize for my response. I am normally a very quite and laid back neighbor. Sadly when I get like this I resemble a runaway nuclear reactor in full blown meltdown mode. Luckily the half life of these come aparts are much shorter than the half life of plutonium. Not only had all the planning and preparation for the trip been in vain, now these darn Canadian blood suckers were trying to drain Cindy and myself of what little blood we had left. It was kill or be killed and kill is what I did.
It was almost midnight before I had then beat down to a manageable number. My pulse rate and blood pressure were still off the high ends of both scales. Cindy was still hiding under the covers in the v birth as I hunted down the last few of those dirty dirty bastards. My incredible wife finally coaxed me under the covers with her sometime after midnight where I finally calmed down enough to just collapse from exhaustion.
We woke up sometime after the sun came up and took stock of our surroundings. The inside of the boat looked like a OJ Simpson crime scene there was so many blood spatters from all the mosquitos I had killed. WE finally were able to laugh a bit as we crawled out of the boat on our way to the marina to get cleaned up. We saw our neighbors in Deja Vu, who quickly retreated inside their boat when they saw us. Probably fearful Dr Jeckle was going to return to the area.
We laughed our way to the marina only to discover the building was closed sue to "Hydro Outage" Hydro is what Canadians refer to as electricity. I tried not to figure that one out. All we could do is laugh and say it continues. We were able to get inside and used flashlights to use the restroom and get cleaned up a bit. So far the Honeymoon is off to a very memorable start!!!

Day one as husband and wife

7-15-2016

Well we made it, the long journey to the point that we are now husband and wife is over, and we made it. Today is the first day in a whole new chapter in our lives. This morning we will wake up as husband and wife for the first time.
OK, can't really say that it felt any different as for the last 4 years I have considered Cindy my wife and treated her as such. Often times I have even referred to her as my wife. But yet it was different. We were now legally a couple, I had a ring on my hand and Cindy had one on hers. Yet something did not change which I am glad of. I still woke up with Cindy in my arms. When Cindy finally did open her eyes she still smiled like she always does, then cuddled back into me closing her eyes and drifting off back to sleep like she so loves to do. I am glad those things did not change.
Once we finally drug ourselves out of bed and made our way down to breakfast we met up with everyone and discussed what everyone was going to do. Only Cindy's son and daughter in law had to head back south so everyone else was going to take in the area.
Cindy's daughter and son in law decided to go hike to the bluffs and Sleeping Bear Dunes with us after breakfast. The bluffs are originally where we were going to get married but after hiking there we all agreed there would have been no way for Cindy's sister Dottie or her other sister Peggy to have been able to make the trek there so it was all good that we could not have it there. When we arrived at the parking lot we could not believe how many cars were there. It was full and people were parking on the road. We hiked the trail and saw several others but not nearly as many as there were cars. Not sure where everyone was. Of course we had to get a pic once we reached the bluffs

It was cloudy and some light drizzle but the temps were very comfortable. Much better than they had been the days prior as it had been quite hot. Even with the cloud cover it is a very pretty view over the lake. We were able to see several boats out in the distance.
Once done with our hike it was time to eat, again, LOL. We headed down to the Empire Village Inn where I had the best BLT I have ever had!!!! It was on home made wheat bread that had been liberally coated with butter. Can we say delicious!!!!
After lunch and several beverages we headed up to the Sleeping Bear Dunes dune climb area. What better way to work off a 2000 calorie lunch than hiking through 3 miles of soft sand to the lake. At least it was still pretty cool but even at that it did not take long for our body temps to start climbing and we all started sheading layers. We did not go quite all the way to the water but we did get pretty close.

Manitou island in the background looks pretty close but it is several miles off the coast of the lower peninsula. I was ready for another beverage by the time we got back to the parking area.
We gave the kids our wine trail map and they went off in search of a winery and we went back to set up the beach chairs by the fire pit so we could have a fire on the beach at sunset with everyone. Back at the inn we picked up Cindy's sister Peggy and took her to the beach with us in the big white "semi". Luckily I missed Peggy's climb up into the truck but I got to take it in a bit later and oh how I wished I would have go pro-ed it! It was a hoot to say the least!
We all met up for dinner at the Empire Village Inn where I could not wait to get another BLT. I told everyone about it but was disappointed to hear that all the wheat bread was gone so I had to get sour dough instead. It was good but the wheat bread was so much better.
After dinner we all headed down to the beach to take up positions around the fire ring in preparation for the light show at sunset. People come and line up their chairs at sunset so they have front row seats. This is one of the reasons we come back to Empire time and time again.

As the sun drifted down closer and closer to the horizon I had to go steal my wife away from the conversation she was having so we could sit down and take in our first real sunset together as husband and wife.

I was so glad Libby snapped this pic of us and we were able to capture this moment in time. It was the first of what hope is millions more!
By the time the sun had finally slipped below the horizon the fire I had started earlier was going good and we all took up positions around the fire ring.

Thank you Amy for taking this pic. I wish I had one of her sitting in her beach chair next to Jerry as I would have photo shopped her into the pic! It was the perfect night for a fire, just a bit cool with wind coming off the water, no bugs, and the clouds all went away so we got to see the almost full moon!
It was almost midnight before we finally all headed back to the inn. Cindy and I had a big day the next day as our Honeymoon was officially starting. The plan was to get up early and head north for the boarder at Sault St Marie then onto Spanish Ontario to launch our sail boat into the north channel of Lake Huron for a week of sailing from island to island. This has been a trip a year in the making and we are both really looking forward to finally seeing all the beautiful sights we have heard so much about.

Time for our Wedding!!!

7-14-2016 6:00 PM

Just 2 hours to go before I take my little Fiance's hand in mine and slip a ring onto it making my best friend my wife! I better get cleaned up and get down to the beach so Cindy can have free reign of the house and get ready herself. Being a man getting ready for a very casual wedding ceremony I was done in 15 minutes! I finalized plans with Jerry who was in charge of bringing Cindy down to the beach at a 8:10 PM. Amy was going to ride down with me to help me set up the easel with the sign that Cindy had made. Everyone else was going to arrive at the beach at 8 pm.
Amy and I arrived at the beach after helping Wendy, the officiant, find her way back down from the bluffs to the beach as she got confused on the location change. When we pulled up at the beach I saw one last surprise waiting on Cindy. High school friends of Cindy, Scott and Mary Brown who we went to Michigan the very first time to see and sail with, came up from Bear Lake MI to attend the service were at the beach waiting on us. Our photographer for the evening, Emily Leuenberger, arrived right behind us so it looked like everything was coming together. Just one small snag potentially developing. As we stood on the edge of the sidewalk and looked out over the lake to the northwest I could see a line of storms bearing down on us. A quick call to Jerry to let him know that arriving with my bride sooner than later might be best then we all hoped for the best.
The up side to the storms was that they made an awesome back drop!

Amy and I got the sign set up and luckily I had snuck my multiplier onto my belt as it got used on the sign. Never let the groom dress himself ;-)

Everyone arrived a bit early and soon it was time for the bride to arrive

After everyone got in place Cindy walked down with her daughter to meet me

This is when we almost had a boo boo. I am so used to kissing Cindy each time we meet and we were both so happy we almost locked lips when she got to me!

Then Libby, the Beach Patrol, jumped in and stopped us in just the nick of time!!!

That was close!!!! Wendy, our officiant was probably thinking we could not wait LOL! We regained our composure and proceeded on with the ceremony. Windy did an awesome job and even let us a hug a couple of times as long as we promised not to kiss. No fear as Libby had her eye on us the whole time!

When I was finally given the ok to kiss my beautiful bride I did not waste any time!

The guest could not throw bird seed so instead we had a sea gull fly over!!! They took to the sky just as we finished the kiss

Here is a group shot of everyone who helped pull off the surprise!

It could not have worked out any better and the rain even held off long enough for us to take pictures.
Here we are with Dottie who was the real reason the surprise even got started as she was really upset with me that she was not going to be there as originally it was just going to be Cindy and myself.

Emily took over and guided us through various poses with our guest and ourselves trying to preserve this very special moment in time for us.

Amy had made us a life preserver sign and brought it up for us.

We found a pile of rocks on the beach and together we made a impromptu prop in the sand

At some point the urge to pick up my lovely lil wife got the better of me ;-)

Cindy begged me not to drop her as it seems she did not think a wet dress would look that good in the pics

Emily wanted to get the sky in the back ground so she had us walk away from her down the beach

We wanted to get some by the lighthouse as we love lighthouses. I don't remember what Emily told us to do but at one point she told us to get a room LOL!

We were having a great time enjoying the moment and Emily was super to work with. This is one of my favorite pics as it captures Cindy peeking up over my shoulder and you can just see the happiness in her eyes.

 Still no rain :-)

 But it was getting closer

So we headed over to Joe's Friendly tavern to meet up with everyone for dinner and drinks. I had called ahead and got them to stay open late for us which worked out great.

I had Beth Schultz make a cake for us and Libby brought it up with her. I don't have a better pic of it than this as I had already released Emily for the night before I remembered the cake. It was an awesome cake and Beth did a great job on it!

I am not sure how the wedding could have turned out any better. Cindy loved the surprise and having her friends and family there made it so much more like a wedding for her. In the end I got all that I wanted. My best friend is now my wife and I can't wait to start making new memories as husband and wife! It was a long time coming but sooooo worth the wait!!!!!!

Life is uncertain,
Like a little boat rocking back and forth in the sea.
Good times are followed by tuff times,
And tuff times are followed by glee.
Unexpected obstacles will block your path,
You need to be able to change and adapt.
There will always be resistance,
Success requires persistence.

The key is to find a good partner,  one who will stand by your side,
Who will sail with you through the changing of the tides.
With them tuff times are not as ruff and will eventually pass,
Then much longer the good times will last.

May you find someone who will never leave you shoreward,
Tackle everything as a team and always move forward,
For life is but a dream.

When I heard this poem I knew that no truer words have been written when it comes to the lady of my dreams. If this is all a dream my one hope is that I never wake, and that Cindy is by my side till the end of time. May we sail the seas of life, together as a team, till the winds of time blow no more.

Our Wedding Day has Arrived!!!!

7-14-2016   8:00 AM

Just 12 hours till go and counting! One last breakfast as a single man LOL

I made a pig of myself while Cindy went out for a run then I had to make another lap of the fruits once Cindy got back and set down for her breakfast. Can we say stuffed? They make the best breakfast for a B&B at the Cottonwood Inn that we have ever found. Being a breakfast person I am big fan! We are huge fans of the blueberry French toast casserole!!!
While we ate we run over the itinerary of what all we need to do before the wedding. First we have to run to Suttons Bay to pick up our marriage licensee, then to Traverse City to pick up Cindy's bouquet that she had made, then back to the inn to get ready before the service. I also needed to run down to Empire Surf Shop and see if I could find someone who could reserve a fire ring for us on the beach so we would be sure to have a place for a fire after the service.
So while Cindy got ready I went in search of someone to help us out. I stopped at the Surf Shop where Beryl, pronounced Barrel, told me about a young man just up the street a few houses. So I ran up there to see if he would be interested in making some quick cash. After talking to Sarah, his mom, she decided that since he was working in that she and her husband would make sure we got the fire ring that was closest to the grass as it was the best pit area. I greatly appreciated her doing this for use and felt much better knowing we were going to have a fire pit waiting on us after the service on the Bluffs. She and her husband just lived right around the corner from the beach so they set up beach chairs and went back several times through the day to move things around to make people think that someone was using them.
Back to the Empire Inn to pick up my fiancĂ© and then off to Sutton's Bay.
One our way to Suttons Bay we got sidetracked by a winery that was right on our way. How convenient? We enjoyed a glass of sweet white wine as we talked to the workers and shared the reason for our visit.

Nothing like being on vacation and drinking before 10 am! Soon we were back on the road to Sutton's bay. A quick stop by the clerks office and we had our license in hand. Down to 9 hours to go.
We turned left at lake and headed north up to North Point for lunch at a small lake side bar called

It was a beautiful setting at the north end of Grand Traverse Bay with a nice harbor area right in front of the restaurant.

We both agreed we needed to comeback and sail Grand Traverse bay! After lunch we headed back down along the west shore of the Leelanau peninsula en route to Traverse City. Once there we had to stop and shop at the Momentum store before picking up Cindy's bouquet. By now we are down to just 5 hours to go!
We headed back west to Empire but once again a winery got in our way and we had to stop and check it out.
It was a little after 4 when we finally arrived back at the Cottonwood Inn. We were just going to make a quick pit stop then run down to the beach and check on the fire pit to make sure all was good before we came back to get ready for the ceremony. We had to stop short as Keri's car was in the drive as she came back to the inn to water the flowers. We were just going to be a second or two so we just parked behind her in the drive and ran inside. Cindy led the way and once we passed through the back dining area off the kitchen Cindy stopped in her tracks. There, sitting in a chair, across kitchen, was her sister Dottie!!!!

Dottie was 10 days out of a knee replacement surgery and never did Cindy expect her to make it but she did! Then her other sister Peggy and her husband Gordon came out of the porch area behind Dottie! Then off our right we heard screaming as our friends Amy and Libby with their husbands Jerry and Bill came running out. They girls were all hoping up and down as Cindy started to weep. But wait! There is more! Off to our right again out walk T&T, (Cindy's son Trent and his wife Twinkie (aka Bethany))!!!!

Cindy looses it at this point and starts to make a puddle on the floor with happy tears!

Little did Cindy know but I had been planning this surprise since last October! I knew Cindy really wanted at least her sisters and kids to be there and of course her friends so I got with everyone and started planning the surprise. The only one I was not able to get in on it was her daughter Erika as she came out and asked if she could come before I could get to her and get her in on the surprise so Cindy knew she was coming. In fact they arrived about 5 minutes after we did and got to partake of the celebration before the wedding as drinks started flowing early ;-) Here are the three Besties

Here is my little Fiance coming up to thank me for her awesome surprise!

I am pretty sure that is her happy look! I still needed to spring a bit of  a plan change for the wedding on Cindy as she was not aware that we could not have the ceremony on the Bluffs like we had planned all along. In the process of me planning the surprise I needed a place to hide everyone's cars at the bluffs parking area as the surprise was originally going to be sprung on Cindy there. I found a large parking lot for the park maintenance workers about 1500 feet east of the bluffs parking lot that would have worked great. Being a good guy I tried to get permission to park five cars there for one hour. After multiple phone calls to the Sleeping Bear Dune parks department I was eventually denied permission from the head of law enforcement for the park. I thanked him for his time and told him I would find someplace else. To which he answered me with a question about if I had a permit? Thinking he was referring to our marriage license I told him we were picking it up the day of the wedding. He then informed me that we needed a permit from the park to have a "organized gathering" in the park. I was like "Organized gathering? It is a small wedding with 15 people for a 10 minute service". It did not matter as a "organized gathering" was 4 or more people meeting at a set time at a set place in the park. Long story short, my application for a wedding on the bluffs was eventually denied because the bluffs were not an "approved site" for an "organized gathering" and I did not have 18 months for them to attempt to approve it. So I went with our second choice which was the beach at Empire, hence the need for the fire pit. After a quick phone call to the village clerk, I filled out a application and emailed it back to her, I had the signed permit returned to me the next morning. I knew Cindy would be fine with the location change especially since everyone was now going to be there. So I told her the change and of course she was fine with it. In the end it turned out to be a good thing as there was no way Dottie or Peggy could have walked the trail to the bluffs and this way they only had a short walk from the parking lot to the beach site.
Just 3 hours to go so with Cindy and everyone celebrating the surprise and the upcoming service I took a minute to catch my breath as the surprise worked perfectly! All the fears of someone slipping up and letting the cat out of the bag never materialized and it went off without a hitch. Cindy had no clue and was totally surprised. It will be a long time before I top that one. I though my surprise proposal in the snow, at midnight, on New Year's eve on a trail in the UP was a good one but this one took the prize.
While the others partook of libations Jerry and I ran down to get wood for a fire on the beach after the service and to check on the fire pit. The chairs were still there and all was good so back to the inn so I could get ready. Just 2 hours and 30 mins to go now!

36 HOURS AND COUNTING!!!!

7-13-16  8:00 AM

Just 36 hours to go till our wedding and we are all loaded up and ready to pull out on our journey north to Empire MI!!! Hard to believe the day is almost here as we started a count down timer on my phone with like 256 days to go. It seemed so far away when we did that but one by one the days came and went.
We have the Memory Maker all loaded and prepared for our honeymoon sail on the North Channel, all the clothes we will need for the wedding and the next two weeks, plus props for the wedding. You could say we are packed to the gills.
Our wedding will be Empire MI on the bluffs overlooking the beach and Sleeping Bear Dunes to the north at sunset on the 14th of July. It is going to be a very simple service with just myself, Cindy, her daughter and husband, the officiant, and the photographer. We wanted to have a very simple service to match our lifestyle. I have been preparing and researching for this trip for the last year. I have done everything to the boat that I can think of in hopes of making this a trip Cindy will remember for ever. I have added things to our 20 foot sailboat that you would normally find on much larger boats in hopes of increasing Cindy's comfort level. I am hopeful we have a great time and make lots of memories.
We pulled out of the driveway and head north a little after 8 am. By 9 am you know who has decided it is time for nap.

Pretty typical as it is very seldom that Cindy can make it to Indy and still be awake. We continue our journey north and soon pull into one of favorite little beach towns, South Haven MI, for a break. Soon we are sitting at the outside bar at the Idler River boat

as Cindy sips on a nice cold glass of SHIT (South Haven Iced Tea) as the locals call it.

No trip to South Haven is complete without a selfie at the lighthouse

After a quick stop by Divana G's boutique we are back in the truck and continuing our trek north. We are in no rush as we just want to get to Empire by dark in hopes of seeing the sunset and we have plenty of time so we drive at a relaxed pace. The boat is riding fine and all seems to be going well, even if we are missing the Cirrus Satellite radio we normally have to listen to.
The sky becomes covered in stratus clouds as we get further north so seeing the sunset is probably not going to happen. We pull into the Cottonwood Inn about 9 pm and find a place to park the boat and truck. After dropping the trailer we run down to the beach in hopes of seeing a glimpse of the sunset but we missed it. But we did get a awesome shot of us with the moon!

Down to just 22 hours to go before two best friends become Mr and MRS!
